Young Scientists Showcase their Projects at WGMS

POSTED ON FEBRUARY 1, 2012

On January 20, WGMS students displayed Science Fair projects that explained the results of their research to their fellow students, to judges, and to their families who came in the evening to view the exhibits.

Each project was judged on the uniqueness of the problem, how well the hypothesis could be tested, design and procedures of the experiment, and how appropriately the materials and equipment were used to carry out the testing.

This year's fair had 106 students made 60 projects;  44 students were entered in the category for Human Sensory Perception, Psychology, Health and Consumer Studies; 45 were about Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Science; and 17were entered under Mathematics, Space, Physics, and Engineering.

Science teachers and coordinators Rick Chapman and Patti Connor recognized four eighth-grade students for entering the Science Fair each of their three years in middle school: Madeline Shuron, Cassandra Mondello, Kaitlin Holdrege, Hunter Buza, Laura Zwerger, Michael Cheevers, and Alexandra McCormick.

Judges were teachers, principals, and community "experts," who questioned the student exhibitors about their projects. Many of the judges commented on how innovative the projects were this year.  Chapman stated, "The quality and diversity of the projects was outstanding. It is obvious that all the participants put a lot of time and effort into their projects."
