POSTED ON FEBRUARY 6, 2012
On February 9, 10, and 11 students at West Genesee High School will perform the classic Broadway musical The Sound of Music.
Set in Austria against the backdrop of World War II, Maria Rainer (Lauren Galimi), a young postulant at Nonnberg Abbey who enjoys the freedom she finds in the hills and mountains outside the Abbey walls. To test Maria's devotion, the Mother Abbess (Alyssa Wleklinski) sends the young postulant to work as a governess for the widowed Captain von Trapp (Vincent McCauley). When she arrives at his home, Maria finds that the Captain has been cold and distant since his wife's death but her cheerful approach and love of singing quickly win over his children Leisl (Marci Fenton), Friedrich (John Buttner), Louisa (Kathryn Galimi), Kurt (William Musengo), Brigitta (Jenna Rahrle), Marta (Erin Dowler), and Gretl (Emily Augello). Over time, Maria even manages to win over the Captain, who begins to feel torn between the governess and his fiance, Elsa Schrader (Jessica Louise). Equally torn between her feelings for the Captain and the vow she is about to take, Maria leaves the house and returns to the Abbey.
As Germany's presence in Austria expands, Captain von Trapp struggles with his dedication to his country and his own opinion of what's right. Elsa and his friend Max Detweiler (Ben Widrick) try to convince him there's nothing he can do to stop Germany's advances while Maria offers him inspiration to follow his heart.
