Why Musical Theater?

• Musical theater is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Although musical theater overlaps with other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements. Since the early 20th century, musical theater stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals (definition from Wikipedia).   There are so many benefits to participating in musical theater. It provides children with the opportunity to explore their imagination and make creative choices at a young age. It demands self-discipline and control but also encourages the development of quick thinking and problem solving skills. Additionally, musical theater fosters social awareness and empathy through exposure to differing social issues, events and cultures that are explored in musical theater stories. These help students to develop an ability to understand works of literature and performance as well as human expression in general. Musical theater is an outlet for students to express themselves in a unique manner artistically and recognize their potential for success.
