Flags to Return to Half-Staff I Honor of Former President Jimmy Carter at Sunrise on Tuesday, January 21
Governor Kathy Hochul is directing that flags on state buildings be flown at full-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, January 20 for the Presidential Inauguration.
Flags are currently at half-staff in honor of former President Jimmy Carter. Following the Presidential Inauguration, flags on state buildings will return to half-staff at sunrise on Tuesday, January 21 and remain at half-staff until sunset on January 28.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of former President Jimmy Carter.
“President Jimmy Carter embodied decency and integrity throughout his life of public service,” Governor Hochul said. “I’ll never forget as a teenager meeting him in Buffalo. He was an inspiration to me and so many Americans. Our hearts are with the Carter family during this difficult time.”
Former President Carter died on December 29 in Plains, Georgia. He is survived by his children Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Governor Hochul Directs Flags To Be Flown at Half-Staff Across New York State Facilities on the Day of Neutra’s Memorial Ceremonies
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced flags on state buildings will be flown at half-staff on, December 3, the day of 21-year-old Omer Neutra’s funeral. Neutra, a dual American-Israeli citizen who was born in New York City and grew up on Long Island, was killed during the brutal Hamas attacks of October 7 according to information released by Israeli government officials earlier today.
“For months we’ve prayed for the safe return of Omer Neutra and all those kidnapped by Hamas on October 7th. This horrific news shakes all New Yorkers to our core,” Governor Hochul said. “I’ve met with Omer’s brave family and learned so much about this incredible young man. As we mourn this tragedy, let us continue to pray for the safe return of the remaining hostages, an end to the war without Hamas in power, and a lasting peace.”
Omer Neutra grew up in Plainview, Long Island and served as a soldier for the Israeli Defense Forces. Governor Hochul has met with his parents, Orna and Ronen Neutra, to discuss the urgent need to bring all hostages home. The Governor has repeatedly and aggressively called for the safe return of all hostages taken by Hamas, including during a 2023 visit to Israel and at multiple memorial and remembrance events.
New York State facilities will lower flags to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, December 3.

Flags Will Be Flown at Half-Staff Across New York State Facilities on Monday, November 18
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced flags on state buildings will be flown at half-staff starting at sunrise on Monday, November 18, in honor of 18-year-old Parks and Recreation aide, Dariel Vasquez. Dariel Vasquez was fatally injured on Saturday, November 11, while supporting work to create a fire line at the Jennings Creek wildfire in Sterling Forest in Greenwood Lake, New York.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Vasquez family as they mourn the sudden and tragic loss of Dariel,” Governor Hochul said. “Dariel was only 18 years old and had a truly bright future ahead of him that has now been unfairly taken away. I commend his dedication to serving and protecting his fellow New Yorkers and his bravery on the front lines.”
Dariel was an 18-year-old aide at the New York State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Department. He is survived by his mother Miosotis and his father Juan.
